Is this scenario familiar? You take a presentation to a client’s office on a USB drive and end up leaving it there..it is much too easy to forget the tiny devices. The folks at My Portable Software have come up with a solution.
The application is called Free USB Guard and it will pop up the above warning if you try to shut down or log off the computer before removing the USB drive. It is a small portable application that you can copy to the root of your USB drive. There is one drawback..you have to remember to start Free USB Guard. This task can be automated in Windows versions before Windows 7 by copying the following text file to a text editor and copy it to the root of your USB drive as aitorun.inf:
[autorun]
open=Free_USB_Guard.exe
action=Run Free USB Guard
icon=Free_USB_Guard.exe
label=Start Free USB Guard
This will not work in Windows 7 for security reasons because many viruses are installed this way. It will however pop up a window that can serve to remind you to start the application manually.
Free USB Guard is a free download at My Portable Software’s web site. It is Donationware so, if you like it and use it you should encourage the developer by making a donation.
