The little netTALK DUO doesn’t look like much..about the size of a large pack of gum with three plugs..Power/USB, Phone and ethernet. That simple look carries over to its setup which is as simple as it gets. Once you take a couple of minutes to activate it on the nettalk.ca website..at which time you are assigned a phone number in the area code of your choice..you have two connection options.
My personal choice is to plug in a phone..I used a standard wireless phone then plug it directly into a spare port on your router…this way you have 24/7 service even when the computer is turned off. The other option is to use the USB port to plug it into your computer. Here you can only use the phone when the computer is turned on. This option is great for travelling..bring the very portable netTALK duo with you and use your laptop to call home from wherever you are.
Once hooked up the Basic Plan gives you a full service VOIP telephone with all the important options:
- Free calling to the US & Canada
- Free calling DUO-to-DUO
- One year of service included with the purchase of the DUO
- Canadian phone number included
- Backed by live technical support
- Voicemail, Call Waiting, Caller ID, 3-Way Calling, 411, e-911 plus free conference calling
Pretty standard stuff..but important to note that live customer support is available: Monday – Friday 9 AM-5 PM and Saturday – Sunday 10 AM-4 PM (Eastern Time Zone). I also liked that the voicemail automatically sends you an email with the message as a voice attachment..very handy.
All that is well and good, but how does it work. Well I tested it connected to a switch attached to my Cisco Linksys E4200v2 router..it takes a few second to establish a network connection and you are ready to go.
I tried it with local and long distance calls to both land line and cellular phones. There was never any problem connecting. Voice quality was good at both ends..clear but a little compressed..like a cell phone..perfectly useable for everyday personal and business use. None of the people I called remarked on the call quality which implies that it didn’t sound different to what they were used to…that is good. Hear it for yourself.Incoming Call Outgoing Call
I felt the quality was good enough to use the netTALK DUO to use as a personal or business phone. It works with any wired or wireless telephone and you can’t beat the price..$59.95 for the netTALK Duo which includes one year of the Basic Plan..after the first year the rate is $39.95 per year. It works with any wired or wireless telephone. netTALK DUO is available at Amazon, Best Buy, Future Shop, Sears, Staples/ Bureau en Gros, TigerDirect, Walmart and Zellers. It is also available online at Dell.ca, Newegg.ca, and Tigerdirect.ca. Once you have installed your netTALK Duo a good companion is Videotron’s new telephone directory to quickly and easily find info on local businesses.
