Bombshell from HP! WebOS and TouchPad dead

Facing bleak fourth quarter results HP made bold moves today to remake the company with a move away from consumer products. This from HP’s third quarter report to investors:

HP will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. The devices have not met internal milestones and financial targets. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.

The HP Touchpad stumbled through a disastrous launch with disappointing reviews and sales but, no-one expected HP to bail on the whole division. There is no indication how much it will cost HP to wrap up this part of the business but analysts feel it will be considerable.

As well HP plans to get out of the PC business..again from the report to investors:

HP announced that its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for the company’s Personal Systems Group. HP will consider a broad range of options that may include, among others, a full or partial separation of PSG from HP through a spin-off or other transaction.

HP’s financial situation may have made these moves unavoidable but they are not without risk..there is the likelihood of a reputation hit for launching the TouchPad then immediately killing it.

Wow that is a shock. Was just playing with the new HP Touchpad @ Bureau En Gros and thought it was pretty good.
