Borrow e-books and audio books from your local library. There’s an app for that!
Online borrowing of e-books or audio books from your local library is not new..but, until now it has been a complicated hassle of downloading the book on your PC or Mac then uploading it to your Tablet and figure out how to make it work with your e-reader of choice. Times have changed.
The Overdrive Media Console allows you to browse the electronic bookshelves of libraries using Overdrive’s eMedialibrary system. Your library may not..penetration is low where I live..only three Public Libraries and the McGill University Library were participating in Quebec..it is better elsewhere, 269 libraries in Ontario are on the system for example as are 715 in New York State so there is a better chance your local library will be one of them..You must be a member of the library before you can borrow books.
It is a great way to save money on your e-book reading but, there are some drawbacks the books must be in ePub format and you will notice the number of such books available is only a fraction of the books a library has in its catalog. Finally just like paper books a library has only a limited number of copies and if all are out you have to join a waiting list.
Borrowing electronic books is still very new but Overdrive is adding libraries every day so as the numbers of libraries on-line and the size of the catalogs increases it will become more popular. If your local library is on board..check here..why not give it a try.
Overdrive Media Console is available free for Windows, Mac, Android, BlackBerry, iPhone/iPad and windows 7. Check here for download links.
