Drive safely..with the help of your Android Smartphone

Wish you could afford a new car with all the latest bells and whistles such as collision avoidance. Well now thanks to an Israeli start-up called Picitup you can get collision avoidance from your Android Smartphone and for the moment it is free. The app is called iOnRoad

Simply mount your smartphone running iOnRoad on a car’s windshield or dashboard,  iOnRoad combines the visual information collected by the smartphone’s camera  with GPS and accelerometer data to give you the equivalent of a heads up display. The vehicle in the lane ahead of the driver is  displayed and marked with a time gap in seconds, indicating how far behind the  lead vehicle the driver is and how much time there would be to react in an  emergency. In addition the  car ahead is marked with a colored overlay that goes from green for a safe  following distance to yellow to red when you’re following too closely.

If you let your attention wander attention and the vehicle ahead stops or  slows suddenly, iOnRoad will flash a full-screen alert and audio warning to get your attention and give you the time to react. iOnRoad can also be set  to run in the background, while a navigation app for example runs in the foreground. Still iOnRoad keeps an eye on the road 🙂 and will pop up a warning if necessary. Check out the video  to see the iOnRoad in action:

iOnRoad is one of the better uses for so called augmented reality I have seen. It turns your Android smartphone into a device that could save your life. it is available at the Android Market and for a limited time is free. Get it before the price goes up.
