First Look: A new tablet and a really fast smartphone from LG
LG launched it’s two latest mobile products in Montreal Monday evening. Sharing the Optimus (“best”) badge, the new LG Optimus Tab and the LG Optimus 2x Smartphone show how LG has clearly moved into the Android camp. Let’s start with the tablet as it is available as of today exclusively at Rogers.
The Optimus Tab has a good feel in the hand weighing in at 625 grams (1.37 pounds) and 12.8mm (0.5″). The screen is a a 1280 x 768 WXGA measuring 8.9 inches diagonally.
The Optimus Tab features a NIVIDIA Tegra 2 Dual Core 1GHz processor running Android 3.0 Honeycomb Operating System. There is a 5 megapixel 3D camera on the back that will record full HD 1080p and a 2MP front facing camera for video conferencing.
The 32Gb WiFi/3G Optimus Tab is available exclusively from Rogers for $449 with a 3 year contract and $699 with no contract.
Next up is the Optimus 2X smartphone. Declared by Guinness World Records to be the first smartphone to feature a dual core processor..it sports the same Tegra 2 chip as the Tab. The display is a bright 4″ LCD Touch Screen and it is as fast as stink. Take a look at this video then open Angry Birds on your phone to see the difference.
The Optimus 2X also features the Android 2.2 operating system with a promised upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. There is a 8MP camera on the back and a 1.3MP camera on the front for video calls. Taken together the specs make for a powerful multimedia device.
LG has yet to announce which carrier will sell the phone however, since it is on the T-Mobile network in the US, I expect to see Videotron and Wind Mobile adopting the Optimus 2X as their flagship smartphone.
I was impressed with both devices on first blush, and as soon as I get the chance to play with them for longer than a few minutes I will post a full review. Watch for it.
