Gardening this weekend? There is an app for that…two actually

The Victoria Day long weekend is upon us..the traditional gardening weekend when Canadians wake up their gardens and plant for the coming season.  If you are like me you can always use a little help so I tracked down some apps with the Canadian gardener in mind.

Before sticking a trowel into the ground you can create a virtual garden with Eden Garden Designer. Eden’s plant library is stocked with beautiful, vivid photorealistic plants and
flowers chosen from the favorites of North American and European perennials and
annuals. You can search the plant library by a number of criteria but most important for Canadian gardeners you can specify the hardiness zone. This video shows you how it works and how you can create an animated virtual garden before you head out to the Nursery.

Eden Garden Designer for iPhone and iPod Touch is free at the Apple App Store.

If you are looking for a more comprehensive guide I suggest the Landscaper’s Companion. Featuring over 5000 plants and 6000 pictures it is an excellent resource for the casual gardener, landscaper, aspiring botanist, or anyone looking for a simple, easy to use plant guide. Landscaper’s Companion is a great tool to take to the nursery when you go plant can look up details on a plant and it’s cultivation requirements before you buy..I found it really handy and I’m not the only one, Landscaper’s Companion was voted “Top 10 Reference App” in Canada last year.

Landscaper’s Companion for iPhone and iPod Touch is $4.99 at the Apple App Store.

Garden centres are awesome! And so are gardeners. We built an App to make it easier for gardeners and local garden centres to connect. Identify unknown plants. Source hard to find species. Connect with other gardeners. Plantola is now available in Canada for iPhone and iPod Touch through the App Store.
