Gift guide: Superphones..great for the geek on your list.
The new so called Superphones feature dual-core processors, huge screens, and great cameras. They make a great gift for the one who wants to carry a small computer around. There are quite a few models out there but here are the ones I suggest.
HTC Amaze 4G If you want the very best, this is the one to get. I called it the best of the bunch for a reason. The Amaze features a gorgeous 4.5″ qHD (quarter high definition, 540-by-960 pixels) super LCD display. It is powered by the the 1.5Ghz Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S3 processor, along with 1GB RAM and the MDM8200 baseband the Amaze is a smooth performer. The camera is so good you can leave your point an shoot at home. Apps open quickly, transitions are smooth and scrolling is as smooth as butter. The Amaze is running Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 withSense 3.0, the latest version of HTC’s popular user interface. The HTC Amaze 4G is available from Telus, Videotron, Wind and Mobilicity. The price ranges from $99 to $599 depending on the plan. In the US the Amaze is available from T-Mobile for $229 to $549
HTC Sensation 4G This is my current favourite..it is one nice looking smartphone, big 4.3″ qHD 540×960 screen flanked by a thin black bezel, nice rounded edges. It is a nice weight and feels good in the hand..with good design HTC has managed to make this big phone feel like a smaller phone. The third generation 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, Adreno 220 GPU, Qualcomm MSM 8260 Snapdragon means this phone is a real performer. The camera is very good..not quite as good as the Amaze but it takes excellent pictures and videos under most conditions. If you are looking for a big screen, full featured and solid phone that isn’t likely to break before you want to upgrade, the HTC Sensation 4G is the phone for you. Available at Bell Mobility for $149.95 on a 3 year plan to 549.95 with no plan and at Virgin Mobile for $149.99 on SuperTab or $549.99 with no contract. In the US get the Sensation at T-Mobile for $0.00 with a two year contract.
Samsung Galaxy S II No argument the Super AMOLED plus screen is the best in the business..bright, good contrast and ultra deep blacks..it is so impressive you can forgive the colours being slighty off and the fact that qHD (960 x 540) resolution is fast becoming the norm among top-tier smartphones and that the GSII’s 800 x 480 is therefore a bit behind..but, fantastic viewing angles do compensate. This is a fast phone with a great camera but for me its thinness is its achilles heel. It doesn’t feel right in my hand it seems bigger that the 4.3″ screen and I always feel like I am going to drop it. There are two other versions of this phone with a bigger 4.5″ screen….the Galaxy S II X, and the Galaxy S II LTE they surprisingly feel better in the hand because the back is more rounded. One of the three models is available from Bell, Rogers, Telus, Virgin and SaskTel at a variety of prices. In the US shop Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
Apple iPhone 4S A vastly improved iPhone 4 For starters there is iOS 5 with a bunch of new features, an A5 dual core processor with dual core graphics as well for much improved performance. The iPhone 4S claims up to 8 hours of talk time and there is a new antenna system that can switch between available antennas to come up with a maximum performance of 14.4 Mbps down. That’s on par with real world 4G, claims Apple. It’s also a world phone, so it works on CDMA and GSM networks. All this means a faster more useable iPhone and a good choice for Apple fans. Available from most major carriers in Canada and the US.
If you are looking for a real bargain I would check out Best Buy and Future Shop. They will be offering special deals on all these phones during the holiday shopping period. You could end up saving quite a bit of money..or at the very least score a few free accessories.
