Hands on: LG Optimus Black..Telus Skype Edition…I like it
With its 1GHz single processor and Android Froyo 2.2 is a bit “last year” but it still has quite a few things going for it. Not the least of which is the NOVA screen. the 4″ 480×800 screen is really bright..up to 700 nits..as good as an AMOLED screen indoors and amazingly readable in bright sunlight outdoors.
The Black is gesture enabled..tapping the phone on the side will move the cursor in a text field..and there are about ten other gestures that can be enabled. As well there is a G button on the left side that enables about half a dozen more gestures..for example hold the button and tilting the phone moves across home screens. This is a really cool feature set I could get used to.
Telus has integrated Skype into the Black. You can use your data connection to make long distance calls and save minutes or use WiFi if you are traveling in a location with frightening roaming charges. The best is that you can charge your Skype credits to your Telus bill.
The LG Optimus Black is impressively thin a mere 9.2mm and a very svelte 109 grams comfortable to hold although it is a bit longer than most phones with 4″ screens.
The front facing 2MP camera is better than average for video calls and the primary 5MP camera takes average pictures under good lighting conditions. Video at 720p is OK but won’t win any Oscars. This is a pretty demanding shot for any camera but look at the shutter roll on the pan.
The LG Optimus Black may be bit of a throwback..certainly not a high powered super phone. It is however powerful enough for the average user..performance is smooth scrolling isn’t accompanied by any jitters. It has some great and exclusive features. If you are looking for something better than an entry level smartphone with great style and cool features, then this is the phone for you. Exclusive at Telus Mobility and priced right at $49.99 with a 3 year term, $399.99 with no contract.
