HP dumps Windows Home Server “Vail”

Hot on the heels of Microsoft’s announcement that it was removing the popular Drive Extender feature from the next version of Windows Home Server “Vail”, HP announces it will retire it’s MediaSmart Server line at the end of the year.
Microsoft insists HP’s decision had nothing to do with the decision to remove the Drive Extender feature from “Vail” and in the Windows Home Server Blog the MS suggests HP’s departure from the field is no big deal.
Microsoft continues to work on delivering ”Vail” to our customers. We are working very closely with our partners such as Acer, Tranquil and many System Builders to bring the best solution to market.
From our partners:
•“Vail will have a big impact on the home media environment, providing an easy streaming and seamless digital file sharing experience for consumers, and Acer is excited to be alongside Microsoft delivering on this goal” says Gianpiero Morbello, Acer Group Corporate Vice President Marketing & Brand.
•“We are entirely committed to the future of Windows Home Server V1 and V2.” says D J Thompson, Managing Director of Tranquil PC, “We will also ensure that there is a suitable transition path from V1 to V2 for our existing and new clients.”

Microsoft’s decision has not been a popular one..whatever is behind HP’s decision, its MediaSmart Servers were an important source of Windows Home Server sales. As well, a petition on Microft’s Connect web site in support of keeping Drive Extender has garnered 1306 comments and 4641 votes in favour, 46 against as of December 3, 2010.

This is not good news. I was seriously looking at buying one. It would be good to know what other options I have. Sounds like a job for a web search…Google!
