iOS 5 coming Next week..October 12
Lost in the cheering and moaning about the iPhone 4S launch yesterday was the announcement that after months of testing by over 100,000 developers the latest operating system for iDevices, iOS 5 will launch on October 12..exactly a week away.
Apple claims over 200 improvements in this new OS but some are more important than others. A biggie is Notifications..an upgrade of this clunky system is long overdue. With the new Notification Center, you can keep track of them all in one convenient location. Just swipe down from the top of any screen to enter Notification Center. Just like in Android. New notifications appear briefly at the top of your screen, without interrupting what you’re doing. And I really like that the Lock screen displays notifications.
The new messaging system..dubbed iMessage functions much like BlackBerry Messaging..you can send free messages via WiFi or 3G from iPhone, Ipod Touch or iPad to anyone with one of these devices. It is integrated into the Messages app so everything is in the same place.
Reminders is a great new feature that lets you organize your life in to-do lists — complete with due dates and locations. Reminders can be location based, so if you need to pick something up at the pharmacy you’ll get an alert as soon as you pull into the parking lot. Reminders also works with iCal, Outlook, and iCloud, so changes you make update automatically on all your devices and calendars.
With iOS 5 your device becomes PC free.. Activate and set up your device wirelessly, right out of the box. Download free iOS software updates directly on your device. Do more with your apps — like editing your photos or adding new email folders — on your device, without the need for a Mac or PC. And back up and restore your device automatically using iCloud.
There are a whole bunch of other feature such as Twitter integration, improved browsing and WiFi sync with your PC so you will certainly want to upgrade next Wednesday. It is a simple process..just connect your iDevice to your PC…probably for the last time…and follow the instructions in iTunes.
iOS 5 is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 3rd and 4th Generation and iPad 1 & 2.
