iPad Mini. First impressions
I dropped into my local Apple Store at Fairview Pointe-Claire this morning to find their stock of iPad Mini’s sold out in less than two hours…no one could give me a number sold though. It is also sold out at the online store in Canada and the US which are now offering 2 week shipping. So, I had to settle with playing with Apple’s latest iToy tethered to the counter.
My impression is that it is a nice size, really thin and light. It feels solidly made..it sort of reminded me of an iPod Touch on steroids which, based on what I read about what is inside is pretty close to the truth. The screen is the same resolution as an iPad 2 but it looks sharper because of the smaller amount of screen space. Don’t hold it next to a Fourth Generation iPad though, the Mini screen pales against the spectacular Retina display.
I tried several apps and they loaded quickly..home screen scrolling is snappy and the screen is bright and sharp. I loaded up a book..which is probably going to be the biggest use for this device and found the type to be sharp with good contrast. iBook3 pretty much developed for this device looks good and performs well. I can see doing a lot of reading with the iPad Mini.
My only concern is the $329 price tag (for the 16Gb WiFi version) which on first blush looks steep. I’m looking forward to getting one in my hands to do a proper review and assess the value for dollar..watch for the full review soon.
