Love to Bike..Map My Ride keeps track

A bum knee keeps me away from walking or running for the chore falls to my bicycle..and now that summer is here I like to get on the bike as often as possible. Since my aim is fitness I set out to find a way to keep track of my rides..there had to be an app for my Android phone. There was more than one   and after some trial and error I settled on Map My Ride as the best for my needs.

Linked to a comprehensive web site Map My Ride is a powerful fitness tool which allows you to create custom rides. The map loads quickly and easy to move and zoom, , the route creation tools do what you expect them to do, and track roads perfectly. It’s also very easy to step backward, and make a correction when you make the inevitable mistakes. As you build your route, the total route mileage is displayed in real time, and you can also open an elevation total and elevation graph screen.

The mobile app is what I wanted..something that would allow me to ride wherever my bike took me and keep track of where I went, how fast. The Android app does that in spades. You can you access all your past rides and data stored on the website but I like the tracking mode. Simply start the tracking and Map My Ride uses the phone’s GPS to keep track of where you will pause automatically if you stop and if you wish can offer voice encouragement..since I keep the phone in my pocket and I don’t think it is safe to ride wearing a headset I haven’t tried that feature.

Once you have finished the ride you can look at the map of where you rode and look at a summary of your ride..including an estimate of the calories you have burned. If you are the bragging type you can send details of your ride to Facebook or Twitter. If your bike ride is part of a weight loss regimen you can keep track of your progress as well. Everything is automatically saved to the website.

Map My Ride does everything I need to keep track of my bike rides..and more..and the price is right. It is a free download at the appropriate stores for Android, iPhone and BlackBerry.
