Most popular Smartphone in Canada..You may be surprised!

Mobile is obviously “The Next Big Thing”..4.7 million devices are shipper world-wide every day and 1.2 million of those devices are Smartphones. This from the folks at Xtreme Labs Inc., a mobile strategy and product development company based in Toronto, ON and Palo Alto, CA. This snapshot of the rapidly changing mobile market sheds some interesting light on where mobile is headed.

I was surprised to see Australia as the biggest consumer of smartphones with 37% of the market considering its small population of 22 million people.

Less surprising is this graph showing the steady growth of Android products over the coming two years. It seems for the moment that the Goggle OS will remain the market leader for some time to come.

By 2015 Android will have firmly established itself as the leading operating system with a healthy lead over the other main players. Noteworthy is that Microsoft’s alliance with Nokia is predicted to allow Windows Phone to take the place of the Symbian OS but not much else. Blackberry and Apple sales are predicted to stagnate.

The Xtreme labs report shows that Smartphone use is on the rise in Canada..currently a third of Canadian mobile phone users have a smartphone and two thirds of new post-paid mobile phone subscribers purchase a smartphone..this explains the huge variety of smartphones being offered by Canadian carriers. So, what is the most popular smartphone in Canada?

If you guessed Android..sorry. Canadian manufacturer RIM is at the top of the heap with its Blackberry OS. Interestingly World leader Android sits at only 13% in the Canadian market. I found that really interesting. What do you think? Comment below.

I’m not surprised by these numbers.
Just by walking in the street you can see how many Apple and RIM devices are in the Market compared to only a few Android devices.

While I really am rooting for RIM to do better in the global marketplace, these number are simply an indicator of how far behind Canadians, in general, are when it comes to their knowledge about smartphones.

While out and about, I see so many Blackberries and iPhones, seldom do I see Androids. But at school in the Engineering department, I see very few Blackberries and predominantly iPhones and Androids (I’m assuming because of the familiarity with tech).

I know this is far from being a large enough sample to prove my point but it is a small anecdote to what I believe is a general lack of understanding of Android, the best alternatives to Blackberries and iPhones.
