New Wireless speaker from Pioneer

Pioneer XW SMA1 speaker

Time was, bringing audio to every room in the house was a complicated undertaking..running wires through walls to the home entertainment centre or hooking up very expensive or very cheap.with matching quality..wireless transmitters and receivers connected to satellite speakers. Times have changed and a trio of speakers from Pioneer are examples of the next big thing in portable audio.

Well known for its audio component systems Pioneer has jumped into the wireless speakers fray with three new models The XW-SMA1-K and XW-SMA3-k..pretty much identical except the SMA3 has a rechargeable battery and is water resistant for outdoor use. Both feature dual 3-inch speakers and a soft dome tweeter, and is equipped with a tuned bass reflex port, designed to enhance the speakers’ bass response. The XW-SMA4-K  features 5 speakers, including dual 3-inch speakers, a dedicated 4-inch subwoofer and dual soft dome tweeters.

The big deal with these new speakers is connectivity Pioneer chose WiFi over Bluetooth because of its range and versatility..they support AirPlay, HTC Connect..a new feature available on HTC One series smartphones..DLNA and Wireless Direct. This video demonstrates some of the versatility.

The big gun is Wireless Direct..that means you can connect your WiFi equipped device to the speaker even if there is no WiFi network..Wireless Direct allows for a direct wireless connection between your smartphone and the speaker, without the need for a wireless router..

So how do these 7 pound speakers sound? my test unit was the SMA 1..full disclosure..I am not an audio expert..I found the SMA1 provided good crisp audio that easily filled a normal size living room. The low end was a little thin..bass reflex enclosures will never replace a sub-woofer.. but unless you want booming loud audio for a noisy party..the Pioneer speaker does a fine job..great for background music at a dinner party..for example.

The Pioneer SMA series of speakers are just becoming available wherever good audio products are sold. The SMA1 is $329 ($299 in the US) and the SMA3 & 4 sell for $429 ($399) in the US
