Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch OK budget tablet

Looking much like a big Galaxy S4, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch is the third generation 7-inch Android tablet from Samsung but don’t expect a heck of a lot new.  In fact, it is a slight upgrade with only minor improvements of which the biggest is the fact that it has a thinner bezel making a bit easier to hold in one hand.

The Galaxy Tab 3 has a 7-inch 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage plus up to 64Gb external storage via a Micro-SD card. It’s also got a 3-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras. In fact except for being a wee bit lighter (42 grams) and a whisker narrower (1.13 cm) it is exactly the same as last year’s Galaxy Tab 2.

It is a good looking if undistinguished tablet..they all seem to look the same displays the “Samsung look” – all plastic with a single physical home key bracketed by a menu and back button (on-screen buttons are gone..more on that later), there is no flash for the ho-hum rear camera. It feels good in the hand and despite the all plastic construction it feels solid and well built.

Performance is quite good, apps open quickly and scrolling is smooth and frankly I don’t really notice the lower resolution screen unless I put is beside a tablet with a better screen..which is most of the competition..The Galaxy Tab 7 is a good size for reading books and the Android Kindle app performs well on this little tablet. However the narrow bezel makes it difficult to hold without changing pages and while moving the buttons from the screen to the bottom frame provides more screen real estate it is difficult to hold this narrow device without accidentally pressing the buttons.

Unlike Samsung phones this tablet does not come with a load of crapware. The Samsung apps that do come with it are quite useful. For example I really like the S Planner calendar app. For those who like to use their tablet as a TV companion will love the Watch On app. Using the built in IR Blaster, Watch On is a combined TV guide and Universal remote that works well.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7-inch is a nice little tablet that will do whatever you expect from a tablet. Unfortunately most of the competition in this space come with better screens and faster processors. I guess the 7″ model suffers for being the runt of the litter.  I would spend another hundred dollars for the 8″ version which has a better screen and processor and I think is the perfect size for a tablet..
