Stream music anywhere in the house for peanuts

Have you ever thought it would be great to stream and control music to speakers all over the house? Haven’t we all, then got a reality check when we saw the price.

Well, look again..this time at this neat little device from Orb Networks called the Orb Music Player. This does a job that normally carries a price tag in the thousands of dollars for considerably less than that..$69 to be exact.

What is this little miracle worker you ask..Orb Networks has been developing streaming software for years and the Music Player uses that expertise. The Orb Music Player is about the size of a hockey puck and couldn’t be simpler..a USB port for power and setup and a stereo output..oh yes  a status light behind the logo..and that’s it.

To set it up you first install the Orb Caster software on your computer (Windows 7, Vista, XP with Service Pack 2 or later, Mac OS X Intel 10.5 or later) and tell it where to find your music. Then you plug the Music Player into the computer’s USB port to configure it for your network. Next connect it to your sound system or speakers and finish the setup.

Now for the control software..Orb Controller is available for iPhone, iPod Touch,  iPad and Android. Install the app from the appropriate store, fire it up and let it find the Music Player on your home network. It is really that simple and IT JUST WORKS. The thing that impressed me the most is that it worked in the WiFi unfriendly location that is my home entertainment centre just as well as it did on a boombox elsewhere in the house. You can install as many Music Players you want and control them individually with your Android phone, iPad or iPod Touch. You can also play music from YouTube and hundreds of internet radio stations.

The iOS app will also stream your music to your device. It is planned to have this feature in the Android app as well but Orb is still working out the kinks on that one.

All this for 69 bucks..the controller apps are free..you can order it from the Orb Store and the shipping costs to Canada are a reasonable $9.99 per shipment, so you can save by ordering a few.

Every once in a while I come across a gadget that I must have. Orb Music Player is one of those. I can’t recommend it highly enough. You won’t be sorry if you buy one…or three.

Not side by side but I have listened to both systems. Depending on how much you want to spend on speakers the system can be much better than either the Bose of Sonos. Connected to my home entertainment system it was of course no contest. I also tried it with the Logitech S715i Rechargeable Speaker and it was surprisingly close for a fraction of the cost.
